Everyone makes mistakes. Adults make mistakes. Children make mistakes. Teach children that their mistakes are opportunities—opportunities to try again, to do things differently. Teach them by giving them examples. Thomas Edison is a great example of someone who made many mistakes as he attempted to invent the light bulb, but he did it. He turned his mistakes into opportunities to learn more, to figure out a way to persevere, to accomplish a great invention.

I too have made mistakes. Several years ago, I made a really costly one. I wanted to reach parents, to help them with behavior management. I sent out 10,000 invitations to parents to attend a workshop. Three people registered!!!! I was discouraged. Mistakes are discouraging, but I still was encouraged to think, “Someday I will find a way to reach parents.” I am still planning and thinking. That is the important thing, not to give up, to keep going, to find the way.
